Services provided by the Hungarian business registry

Company documents forming the basis of official company registration in Hungary are recorded in the business register together with information on registered companies. The courts, acting as courts of registration, are responsible for maintaining the register. Company documents and data are stored electronically.

Digital company administration in Hungary
Hungarian company administration is increasingly digital. Company registrations and changes to registered company data are generally handled electronically with the involvement of a legal representative, while company documents and court communications are processed in electronic form. The Company Information Portal also supports the preparation of standard-form constitutional documents, which can be digitally signed and submitted as part of the electronic company registration file.

On the website of the Service of Company Information and Electronic Company Registration of the Ministry of Justice (Company Information Service, https://www.e-cegjegyzek.hu/), information on companies registered at any court of registration in Hungary is freely accessible.

The following current or historical details can be found in the business register at the time of the request:

• company registration number,
• company name,
• registered office (székhely),
• business premises,
• branches (fióktelepek),
• activities,
• registered capital,
• tax number,
• whether bankruptcy, liquidation or voluntary dissolution proceedings have been initiated,
• and whether a current or former executive officer or manager of a business association is disqualified from serving in such a capacity under Section 3:22 of Act V of 2013 on the Civil Code.

The following information is updated on the first day of each week:

All company information in the business register (stored company extract, tárolt cégkivonat), as well as information on registration or amendment applications that have not yet been entered in the register.

Company details include:

Ownership information (shareholders or members) and legal representatives of companies, commercial associations without legal personality (jogi személyiség nélküli gazdasági társaság) and other organisations; the authority to represent them; and, for natural persons, membership of a supervisory board.

Updated information can also be obtained using the search engine on Mondays.

In addition to company information, the business register can provide data based on other search criteria, including data that is no longer current, and company documents may also be viewed. Information is available from the courts of registration and through the Company Information Service. Authentic or non-certified copies of company documents and company information may be obtained for a fee.

To the extent described above, the contents of the Hungarian business register are available free of charge at https://www.e-cegjegyzek.hu/?ceginformacio. Access to additional material is subject to a fee.

How to search the Hungarian business registry

Information about a company can be found using any of the following search criteria:

• company name;
• company registration number;
• tax number.

Mandatory Cégkapu (Company Gate) for companies

Hungarian companies are generally required to maintain a Cégkapu (Company Gate) account for official electronic communication with public authorities.

Cégkapu is the company’s official electronic mailbox. It is used to send and receive official documents, tax filings, notifications and other administrative correspondence. Authorities, including the Hungarian Tax Authority (NAV), may also deliver official documents to the company through this channel.

Access to Cégkapu is managed by an authorised administrator, who can grant access rights to other persons responsible for the company’s electronic administration.

It is important to distinguish Cégkapu from DÁP and Ügyfélkapu+: DÁP and Ügyfélkapu+ are primarily used for the electronic identification of individuals, while Cégkapu is the company’s official electronic communication channel.

Companies should therefore ensure that their Cégkapu account is properly registered, regularly monitored and integrated into their ongoing accounting workflows in Hungary, as official tax communications are subject to strict legal deadlines.

Digital identification: DÁP and Ügyfélkapu+

Access to Hungarian electronic government services has also changed significantly. Since 16 January 2025, the former username-and-password-only Ügyfélkapu login can no longer be used for government websites and applications. Individuals can instead authenticate using Ügyfélkapu+ or the Digital Citizenship Programme (DÁP).

DÁP provides secure digital identification, QR-code login and access to certain government services and official messages. In company-related administration, however, it is important to distinguish between identifying an individual and electronically representing a company. DÁP does not replace Cégkapu or the specific electronic communication and signature requirements applicable to companies and their legal representatives.

How reliable is the information in the registry?

For companies registered in Hungary, the information referred to in Article 2 of Directive 2009/101/EC is available online free of charge.

Information on publicly traded companies in Hungary is made available by the court of registration or the Company Information Service, or is published in the Company Gazette. The Company Gazette, available free of charge at https://www.e-cegkozlony.gov.hu, is the official journal of the Ministry of Justice. A company’s articles of association and any amendments, which are uploaded daily, are published in the Company Gazette by the court of registration together with business-register data relating to public limited companies and limited liability companies.

The history of business registration in Hungary

The courts have recorded information in the business register electronically since July 1993, when the National System of Business Information and Company Registration (Országos Céginformációs és Cégnyilvántartási Rendszer) became fully operational.

Upcoming digital reform of the company registry

Hungary is preparing for a further major digital transformation of its registration system. The new Act on the Registration of Legal Persons is scheduled to enter into force on 1 January 2027. The reform aims to create a more unified electronic registry, increase the use of automated decision-making, improve data exchange between state registers and further reduce administrative burdens. Electronic documents and files will continue to play a central role in registration procedures.
